Will to win: Jarvis continues Shels' hot streak with SSE Airtricity / Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month prize

Shelbourne attacker Will Jarvis has been named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month for March after a stellar month in which his team won five games.

The on-loan Hull City player helped Shels end March clear at the top of the Men's Premier Division, starting all five games and scoring three goals including a brace in a 2-1 win over St Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park.

The English winger has been a creative force all season for Damien Duff's league leaders.

He turned in a man of the match performance against their city rivals, with his two identical second half strikes helping Shels increase their lead at the summit.

A week earlier, his late penalty helped his team get the ball rolling in another Dublin Derby as Bohemians were beaten 2-0.

In a vote of SWI members, Jarvis was a popular winner in the poll, finishing ahead of Derry City's in-form striker Patrick Hoban, who finished in second place. Jarvis' Shels teammate Paddy Barrett was third.

Jarvis wins the award having been nominated for the first time in his short career in Ireland.

After 12 years without a POTM winner, Shels have now seen a player win this award three times in the last four months - following Jack Moylan's win last October and Mark Coyle's victory in February.

Speaking after receiving his award, Jarvis said: "The team have been brilliant to start the season off. I'm glad to be a part of it so far.

"For me as well, obviously, last season when I came my statistics weren't as great but to score in three Dublin derbies and to win the games as well, it's brilliant for me."

Jarvis returned to Tolka Park at the end of January for his second loan spell with Duff's team. His familiarity with his surroundings have helped the 21-year-old hit the ground running.

"The lads and staff welcomed me brilliantly and I knew most of the lads, there are a few new players and they've all settled in as well," he said. "It helps. But I'm going to need to settle in as well. The playing style is similar and it suits.

"I was speaking with Luke Byrne a lot and the gaffer a lot as well and the sort of stuff they were saying to me sounded appealing. It was a no-brainer for me."

Jarvis picked out his performance in Shels' away victory over Pat's a month ago as his personal highlight of the campaign so far.

"I scored both goals to win. For Shels fans and for us as well, it was a massive game, big three points," Jarvis said.

The six-man shortlist for March's Player of the Month award also featured Sligo Rovers' Max Mata, Joshua Honohan of Shamrock Rovers and his Hoops' teammate Darragh Burns.
